Event Picture

A one-week Introduction to Modeling Instruction Workshop for MS and HS teachers at the University of Nebraska at Omaha

Description:   This in-person, one-week workshop introduces science teachers to Modeling Instruction, an evidence-based pedagogy that fosters deep conceptual understanding and student engagement in physics, physical science, and chemistry. Participants will explore the Modeling Cycle, its foundations in cognitive science, and practical strategies for implementing it in their classrooms. Through hands-on, inquiry-based activities, collaborative discussions, and interactive whiteboarding, teachers will experience Modeling both as students and educators. The workshop will emphasize techniques to help students develop scientific models, think critically, and actively construct knowledge—leading to more equitable, engaging, and effective science instruction. Whether you’re new to Modeling or looking to refine your teaching approach, this workshop will provide practical tools to transform your classroom.

Meet the Leaders:

Judy Stucky  grew up in Minnesota with a father that shared his love of electronics and model airplanes which  led her to  starting college as an electrical engineering major.  One of her college physics professors asked her to be his TA.  This is where she  found that sharing her love of physics with others was more enjoyable than doing electrical engineering so she switched to being a physics major doubling in secondary education. Judy did her student teaching in Physics in Bloomington, MN.  Her first teaching job was as a Physics teacher in Sioux Falls, SD.  32 years later and still teaching Physics and AP Physics.  Having  learned about modeling from colleges at AAPT meetings, she  begged her district to send me and a co-worker to a 3-week Modeling Physics workshop where I was  hooked.  She has  also attended a 3-week E&M Modeling workshop and a 3-week Modeling workshop on Waves, Light and Optics.  Finally she  attend the AMTA Leadership Academy,  a 1-week workshop to train as a Modeling Workshop leader.
