2025 Modeling Physics-Mechanics - UNO

Event Picture

A two-week Physics-Mechanics Modeling Workshop at the University of Nebraska at Omaha

Description:  This immersive two-week workshop equips high school physics teachers with research-based instructional strategies rooted in Modeling Instruction, a pedagogy that aligns with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and cognitive science principles. Focusing on mechanics, participants will engage in hands-on, data-driven activities that develop conceptual models, enhance student-centered learning, and integrate experimental design and data analysis. Teachers will experience Modeling Instruction firsthand, refine curriculum materials, and explore effective scaffolding techniques to deepen student understanding. Through collaboration and inquiry-based learning, participants will leave with practical tools and strategies to enrich any physics program.

Meet the Leaders:

Judy Stucky  grew up in Minnesota with a father that shared his love of electronics and model airplanes which  led her to  starting college as an electrical engineering major.  One of her college physics professors asked her to be his TA.  This is where she  found that sharing her love of physics with others was more enjoyable than doing electrical engineering so she switched to being a physics major doubling in secondary education. Judy did her student teaching in Physics in Bloomington, MN.  Her first teaching job was as a Physics teacher in Sioux Falls, SD.  32 years later and still teaching Physics and AP Physics.  Having  learned about modeling from colleges at AAPT meetings, she  begged her district to send me and a co-worker to a 3-week Modeling Physics workshop where I was  hooked.  She has  also attended a 3-week E&M Modeling workshop and a 3-week Modeling workshop on Waves, Light and Optics.  Finally she  attend the AMTA Leadership Academy,  a 1-week workshop to train as a Modeling Workshop leader.
