This course is designed to help new Modelers implement the strategies learned in a Modeling Workshop.
Cost: $300
Pre-requisite: Participants must have taken at least one Modeling Workshop
The Chemistry I workshop has teachers experience the Modeling curriculum as a student would. The chemistry follow-up workshop will direct more attention to logistical challenges, minor enhancements to teaching methods, and exploring the intended meaning behind some of the AMTA resources. We will debrief and reflect on the implementation of chemistry content for the first ten units while interleaving teaching practices that support students and the instructor. This class is ideal for teachers who have recently completed a workshop.
Class size is limited to 24 participants.

10/01 Week 4: Units 2 & 3 - particle motion, energy bar charts, IFE tables

10/15 Week 6: Phenomena, concept 1st - vocabulary last
10/22 Week 7: Units 4 & 5 - compounds, amounts of chemicals, revisit quantitative reasoning
10/29 Week 8: Storylines, unit 6 naming, logistical issues
11/05 Week 9: Unit 8 & 10- BCA tables, atomic structure, alternative sequences
11/12 Week 10: What is a model? Communication with stakeholders
Meeting Time: Sundays from 3-4:30 pm (ET)

Instructor: Scott Milam currently teaches chemistry and IB chemistry HL at Plymouth High School in Michigan. Scott holds a BS and MS in Chemistry. He completed his initial training in the Modeling Instruction pedagogy in 2015, and has led workshops in 2018 and 2020. Scott was the 2017 Michigan Science Teacher of the Year and was a 2019 PAEMST finalist. Scott is also the recipient of AMTA's 2023 Malcolm Wells Award Leadership.
