The Introduction to Modeling Instruction in Chemistry I hosted by Gary Abud and Scott Milam is full, AMTA will schedule a second course for Introduction to Modeling Instruction in Chemistry I, details soming soon!

Experienced Modelers, Gary Abud and Scott Milam, will lead the 2021 Introduction to Modeling Instruction in Chemistry I

Course Description:

Chemistry teachers will participate in 45 hours of online training in Modeling Instruction in Chemistry. The course will focus on an evidence-based constructivist approach to chemical education where participants will learn how to leverage Modeling Instruction in the classroom to improve student understanding of chemical concepts. Topics addressed in this course will include: the particle nature of matter, energy, the mole concept, chemical change, bonding, and stoichiometry. Participants will engage with lab experiences, whiteboards, and Socratic dialogues using a Zoom virtual classroom.

Throughout the course, teachers will be asked to reflect on their practice and how they might apply the techniques they have learned in the course to their own classes. All materials (including videos of labs and demos) used in the course will be provided to the participants to use in their (virtual or traditional) classrooms.

Meet the leaders:
Gary Abud, Jr. is an award-winning educator, author of Science With Scarlett, and an educational consultant in private practice near Detroit, MI. He has used Modeling Instruction in physics, chemistry and biology since 2008, teaching high school in Michigan as well as Arizona, and he has facilitated multiple Modeling Workshops in Michigan. He lives with his wife and kindergarten daughter, and has recently been focusing his work on early childhood education to apply Modeling Instruction approaches to teaching science to the youngest of students—including his book which models the color mixing of light. Gary is the 2014 Michigan Teacher of the Year. Learn more about Gary’s work at SagaEducators.org and his book at ScienceWithScarlett.com

Scott Milam currently teaches chemistry and IB Chemistry HL at Plymouth High School in Canton, MI. He started using modeling instruction in 2015 and has helped lead workshops in 2018 and 2020. In 2019 Scott published The No Teacher Left Behind Club and is slowly progressing towards writing more books. There are multiple chemistry songs that he has written and performed available on YouTube. He also enjoys reading nonfiction about education, cognitive science, and antiracism. Scott was the 2017 Michigan Science Teacher of the Year and one of the 2019 PAEMST finalists.
