NEW - 2020 Introduction to Modeling Instruction in Chemistry I

Event Picture

Due to high demand, a second section of Introduction to Modeling Instruction in Chemistry I will be led by experienced Modelers, Gary Abud and Scott Milam.

The course is full, please email wendy@modelinginstruction.org to be added to the waitlist.

Due to the COVID-19 crisis, most face-to-face Modeling Workshops have been transitioned to distance learning opportunities.

Course Description:
Chemistry teachers will participate in 45 hours of online training in Modeling Instruction in Chemistry. The course will focus on an evidence-based constructivist approach to chemical education where participants will learn how to leverage Modeling Instruction in the classroom to improve student understanding of chemical concepts. Topics addressed in this course will include: the particle nature of matter, energy, the mole concept, chemical change, bonding, and stoichiometry. Participants will engage with lab experiences, whiteboards, and Socratic dialogs using a Zoom virtual classroom.

Throughout the course, teachers will be asked to reflect on their practice and how they might apply the techniques they have learned in the course to their own classes. All materials (including videos of labs and demos) used in the course will be provided to the participants to use in their (virtual or traditional) classrooms.

Dates: June 15- July 3
Meeting times: Monday-Friday 9:00 am-12:00 pm PDT / noon - 3:00 pm EDT
Leaders: Gary Abud (MI) and Scott Milam (MI)
Costs: $750
Graduate level credits: $79 per credit through the University of Pacific
Location: Zoom

Meet the leaders:
Gary Abud, Jr. is an award-winning educator, author of Science With Scarlett, and an educational consultant in private practice near Detroit, MI. He has used Modeling Instruction in physics, chemistry and biology since 2008, teaching high school in Michigan as well as Arizona, and he has facilitated multiple Modeling Workshops in Michigan. He lives with his wife and kindergarten daughter, and has recently been focusing his work on early childhood education to apply Modeling Instruction approaches to teaching science to the youngest of students—including his book which models the color mixing of light. Gary is the 2014 Michigan Teacher of the Year. Learn more about Gary’s work at SagaEducators.org and his book at ScienceWithScarlett.com

Scott Milam has taught a variety of chemistry courses over his 15 years of teaching in Michigan. He completed his training in chemistry Modeling and has been actively using the pedagogy for the past 5 years.  Scott is the 2017 Michigan Teacher of the Year and is currently one of 3 PAEMST finalists for 2019.
