Event Picture

2020 Introduction to Modeling Instruction in Chemistry I, with Erica Posthuma and Ryan Bruick as leaders.

The seats for the course have all been reserved, if interested register for the second Introduction to Modeling Instruction in Chemistry I, which will be led by Gary Abud and Scott Milan

Due to the COVID-19 crisis, most face-to-face Modeling Workshops have been transitioned to distance learning opportunities.

Course Description:
Chemistry teachers will participate in 45 hours of online training in Modeling Instruction in Chemistry. The course will focus on an evidence-based constructivist approach to chemical education where participants will learn how to leverage Modeling Instruction in the classroom to improve student understanding of chemical concepts. Topics addressed in this course will include: the particle nature of matter, energy, the mole concept, chemical change, bonding, and stoichiometry. Participants will engage with lab experiences, whiteboards, and Socratic dialogs using a Zoom virtual classroom.

Throughout the course, teachers will be asked to reflect on their practice and how they might apply the techniques they have learned in the course to their own classes. All materials (including videos of labs and demos) used in the course will be provided to the participants to use in their (virtual or traditional) classrooms.

Dates: June 15- July 3
Meeting times: Monday-Friday 9:00 am-12:00 pm PDT / noon - 3:00 pm EDT
Leaders: Erica Posthuma (IN) and Ryan Bruick (IN)
Costs: $750.  .
Graduate level credits: $79 per credit through the University of Pacific
Location: Zoom

Meet the leaders:
Erica Posthuma has been a chemistry teacher since 2001 and currently teaches Chemistry, AP Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, and Biochemistry at University High School of Indiana. She has served on the boards of the American Modeling Teachers Association, the American Chemical Society’s Exams Institute, Indiana University School of Education, is the Indiana representative for AACT, and is an editor for ChemEdX. She has presented at local, state, and national conferences on Modeling InstructionTM, grading and assessment, and science communication. In 2014 Erica was awarded the Excellence in High School Teaching Award from the American Chemical Society Central Region.  She has been published in the Journal of Chemical Education and has co-authored a chapter for the book Liberal Arts Strategies for the Chemistry Classroom.

Ryan Bruick has been a classroom teacher since 2004, beginning his career at Wheaton Warrenville South High School near Chicago, IL.  While at WWSHS he learned Modeling InstructionTM from expert modelers, Jim Stankevitz and Phil Culcasi.  In 2007 Ryan started teaching at Noblesville High School, a suburb of Indianapolis, IN.  In 2018, he accepted an opportunity to teach abroad for a year at the American School of Dubai, before returning to Noblesville. Ryan attended his first Modeling Physics Workshop in 2004, and his first Modeling Chemistry workshop in 2010. Ryan is both a chemistry and physics modeler and also teaches engineering, CAD, and electronics. He has presented at local and state conferences on Modeling InstructionTM, technology use in the classroom, standards-based learning, and the neuropathology of learning.
