Module: Energy Bar Charts in Middle School

This module will be on Energy Bar Charts in Middle School with Susan Quinn and David Bates

Come and explore how to introduce your students to energy transfer and storage through the use of Energy Bar Charts. During this workshop we will discover the basics of how Energy Bar Charts work and then provide examples of how to effectively use Energy Bar Charts to provide deeper investigation and enhanced understanding in the middle school science classroom.

Time: 10 am - 12:30 pm PDT and Arizona - 1 pm - 3:30 pm EDT

Meet the presenters:
Susan Quinn
has two Master’s degrees in STEM curriculum and Instruction and STEM Leadership and a BS in Agriculture. Susan attended the Middle School Modeling Workshop at MCESA, Phoenix, AZ and attended the leadership training in 2016.She also has teaching credentials in Biology, Earth Science, and Middle School science and elementary education. She has experience teaching all subjects in the alternative school setting and middle school setting for 10 years. She currently teachers 7th and 8th grade STEM science at Tartesso Elementary School in Buckeye, Arizona. 

David Bates - Dearborn Public Schools, Michigan
David is currently having a great time facilitating science learning for a lively group of 6th and 8th grade students at Unis Middle School where he also has the privilege of serving as the science department chair and co-chair for the district secondary science committee. He has taught in a variety of educational settings over his 32 year career, including adult Special Education CI classes, 1st grade, 3rd grade, 5th grade, and elementary foreign exchange. David earned his BS in Special Education and MA in Educational Leadership from Eastern Michigan University. His perspective has been informed by time as an elementary summer school principal as well as two terms on the Board of Education for the Ypsilanti Public Schools from 2006 to 2014, where he served as President of the Board for seven years. Modeling courses include Modeling for Middle School and Advanced Modeling: Cognition and Instruction. David has also trained in the Reading Apprenticeship program, Next Gen Science Exemplar System, and he is a Professional Learning Facilitator for MiSTAR, the Michigan Science, Teaching and Assessment Reform. His belief is that every child should have the opportunity to know the joy of learning something new.

Modules are $25 for current AMTA members and $50 for non-members.

Modules are conducted via Zoom videoconferencing software.  
Any handouts needed for the session will be shared prior to the start of the module.

Cancellation and refund policy:
If there is insufficient enrollment (fewer than 10 registrations), AMTA or the module leaders may elect to cancel the session.  In this event, the cancellation decision would be made one week before the module is scheduled to begin.  All those registered will receive a voucher for free registration for a future module.

If you find that you are unable to attend a distance learning module after you register and pay for a module, a voucher for free registration for a future session will be issued.  Cash refunds will not be issued.
