Arizona School for the Arts, Phoenix Arizona, will be the host for a 2-week biology Modeling workshop
Renee Ashlock and Tanea Hibler will lead a 2-week biology Modeling workshop at Arizona School for the Arts, July 8-19, 2019.
Renee Ashlock currently teaches Biology at the Arizona School for the Arts. She earned a BA in Biology at Rhode Island College and a MA in Educational Leadership from the University of Connecticut. Upon moving to Arizona in 2006 she began taking the necessary courses to be certified to teach middle school science and high school biology. Renee has been using the modeling method of teaching for 5 years now, first in Physical Science and later in Biology. Though she did not know what it was called, she really used modeling in her middle school classes as well working in whiteboard meetings into most of her lessons. ASA is the perfect place for her as she can pursue her passion for theatre and photography and work in an environment where most of the science teachers use modeling. Tanea Hibler After having taught at international schools since 2009, Tanea returned to teach in Phoenix in 2015, and she currently teaches AP Biology and Honors Biology at Brophy College Preparatory. She previously taught at the Wells International School in Bangkok, Thailand, and then taught science for four years at Concordia International School in Shanghai. Prior to moving to Asia, Ms. Hibler taught science in the Buckeye Union High School District. She earned a Bachelor of Science in biology from California State University-East Bay, a Master of Education from ASU, and a Master of Science in teaching earth science from Wright State University. Tanea has taken physical science and biology modeling courses, has participated in the DOE Academies Creating Teacher Scientist program, traveled aboard Robert Ballard's Nautilus as a teacher argonaut in the Aegean Sea, and has participated in the Honeywell Educators Space Camp in Huntsville Alabama. She is passionate about teaching, collaborating with other teachers, and working towards higher equity and inclusion. Attending a modeling workshop in biology provides teachers with the missing link to vertically align current modeling practices with physics and chemistry Modeling pedagogical practices. Teachers participating in the Modeling biology workshop will engage in collaborative processes to reveal misconceptions students and teachers may face and discover how Modeling Biology aligns with common core, AZccr's, NGSSs and the Arizona state standards.
