Janelle Hollingshead will lead a discussion on Proportional Reasoning on October 9, 2018, 4 pm PDT.

Janelle:
I am a chemistry teacher in Chicago Public Schools. I have modeled for three years and I specialize in helping students with special needs.  My school is the most diverse school in the city.  My students are on free and reduced lunch but they are also super smart because they had to test into my school.  I love my school because I feel like we are working to stop the cycle of poverty.

Workshop is going to be more of a presentation. It's going to show how I have gotten away from dimensional analysis since that really only focuses on canceling units. I now have kids write for every statements in order to do conversions and then they have to decide whether to multiply or divide and also for each sentence. I feel like the picture is extremely powerful to keep the kid's head in the problem. I have found when you focus on canceling units that they stop thinking about the problem and have no easy way to check whether their work was correct. I have found this new method with for every statements and proportional reasoning to work for 100% of all of my students no matter what their learning disability may be. I will be presenting it in hopes of feedback from other people and ways to even improve the method that I will put forward. I'll also be open to feedback about weather people really do love dimensional analysis with conversions and if so why.
