Distance Learning Middle School II workshop

Event Picture

Distance Learning workshops are for people who already took a face-to-face Modeling Workshops. This is a second semester Middle School Modeling Workshop™.

Middle School Modeling II is a 15 week distance learning workshop for teachers who have already taken a Modeling workshop, thus bringing together a group of participants who are familiar with the pedagogy and know how to implement it in a classroom. For this reason the workshop will begin with just a quick share out and discussion of the units typically covered in an introduction to Middle School Modeling workshop, followed by a brief revisit of the modeling cycle and 3 overarching middle school “super-models:” matter (describing and classifying its structure), energy (as an agent of change in any system), matter and energy interactions (system interactions).

From this point the workshop will progress into a life science theme where the three models will continue to be developed and explored. Units to be covered include Life in Bodies of Water, Plants and Photosynthesis, and Heredity and Adaptations. The course will require participants to meet remotely for 3 hours each week on Tuesday from 4:30-7:30 pm (PT) and to spend about 3 additional hours a week on their own working through the hands-on/data collection portion of the activities along with a few other assignments.

Due to the newness of the middle school science resources, the variety of teaching environments, and various requirements that middle school teachers face across the country; one of the main goals of this workshop is to extend participants understanding of the middle school modeling resources and practice how to modify activities, improve the current unit activities, and “modelize” their own activities.

Erin Conrardy: I have been a Modeler since '09. I was introduced to Modeling Instruction during my Masters program at Arizona State University, and I have been utilizing the pedagogy ever since. Modeling Instruction hit a chord, and opened a curiosity within me that I knew I had to bring to my own classroom and now my fellow teachers.  My involvement with Modeling Instruction evolved as I helped develop the first set of middle school Modeling resources, led multiple middle school science workshops, and have recently become a member of the AMTA board.  AMTA members and staff continue to inspire me; I am now looking forward to this new opportunity of leading the first ever Middle School Modeling 2 workshop in the ever growing, popular distance learning platform.erinconrardy@gmail.com

Christi Mendoza:  I have 17 years experience working in the field of education.  I received my B.A.E. from Arizona State University.  I also hold a Master’s in Secondary Education from Northern Arizona University and a Master’s in Natural Science with an emphasis in middle school STEM from Arizona State University.  In 2013, I received my National Board Certification in the area of Early Adolescence Science.  Throughout my career, I have had the opportunity to work both in both the formal education setting, as a classroom teacher, and the informal education setting, as the Outreach Coordinator for an Engineering Research Center.  I became a modeler in 2009 when I was introduced to Modeling Instruction as part of my MNS program at ASU.  Since then, I have become a workshop facilitator for the American Modeling Teachers Association (AMTA) and have led several modeling workshops for middle school teachers. christimendoza@hotmail.com
