Fundamental theories of thinking and learning will be reviewed, and the latest theoretical trends will be examined. A firm understanding of characteristics of life, classification, populations, and evolution will be our vehicle to experiencing the Modeling methodology. We will examine and define conceptual models, modeling, and Modeling Instruction, as well as experience what it is like from the perspective of both the teacher and student. We will also discuss and evaluate how Modeling courses are aligned with NGSS and help create a coherent story for biology in high school science.
Dates: July 13-31, 2020
Meeting times: Monday-Friday 10:00 am-2:30 pm PDT / 1:00 - 5:30 pm EDT
Leaders: Renee Ashlock (AZ) and Tanea Hilbler (AZ)
Costs: $750. .
Graduate level credits: $79 per credit through the University of Pacific
Location: Zoom

Meet the leaders:
Renée Ashlock teachers Middle School Science at Brophy College Prep in Phoenix, AZ. She taught Fresh/Soph and AP bio for 7 years prior and 5 years before that Middle School Science. She received her Bachelors in Biology from Rhode Island College and a Masters in Educational Leadership from The University of Connecticut. She has been modeling her whole teaching career, though didn’t know it had a name her first five years. Modeling instruction transforms her classroom into a student centered environment allowing students to develop models through inquiry and data interpretation. In her spare time she is a professional photographer doing publicity for two community theaters and portraits/events when asked. She loves theatre and frequently designs lights for shows(again in her spare time). She has a husband and two grown children.

Tanea Hibler has been teaching MS/HS science for 15 years. Currently, she teaches AP Biology and Honors Biology at Brophy College Preparatory in Phoenix, Arizona. Modeling instruction workshops and training have empowered her to focus on creating student-centered classes while also focusing on inclusive practices. Tanea has helped facilitate distance learning courses, webinars, conference workshops and presentations, as well at Modeling Biology Summer workshops in 2017 and 2018. She also serves on the board of AMTA as a member at large. Tanea has a Masters in Teaching Earth Science, a Masters in Secondary Education, and a BS in Biology. She is passionate about learning and instruction and looks forward to working with other passionate teachers.
