I've found a few tiny green worms having eaten and then wrapped themselves in new foliage on my mutabilis rose and new baby redbud. Besides just kicking their butts off my plants, which I've done, what else should I do? What are they?

I have the exact same problem on my roses--tiny green worms or caterpillars about 1/2-3/4" long, with black heads. Some of them were crawling on leaves and some were wrapped up in a sticky substance in a folded leaf. Today I bought ladybugs that I will release this evening. I'll let you know if they seem to be able to take care of the problem, but I would like to identify them if possible.

Thank you, Kay! That's exactly what I've got. I've only had a handful, which I've picked off by hand. It would be great to know what they are, though. Let me know about the ladybugs - I have a few in my garden, but perhaps not enough!

Susan,
The ladybugs seem to have left the premises shortly after arriving. I am not seeing green worms any longer, but two of my roses have definite problems that I attribute to the worms and the rest of their sorry life cycle. Have you had any luck?
K

Hi Kay,

After a little research on these boards and elsewhere, I used Bacillus thuringensis (Thuricide Concentrate which I got at Southland Feed Store here in Dallas) on my redbuds. I've had to make three or four applications, but it seems to have done the trick. My "trees" are little more than sticks at this point, so I put it in a spray bottle and sprayed away. And it's very inexpensive and safe for everything.

Good luck!

Susan
