I am in Dallas, going to overseed my St. Augustine dog run with winter rye. I know everyone says DONT DO IT, but i am going to do it. I want green grass this winter in the dog run with no mud, I will worry about the spring in the spring. That being said, when do i plant it? Do I mow short then overseed with spreader? Optimal timing?

Howdy!

I am sorry. I have no helpful tips on planting winter rye. We did look into years ago. But TruGreen told me I would need to scalp my SA, before planting. And that would most likely be the end of the SA.

I will mention that one neighbor planted rye seed about 2 weeks ago. His front yard was in bad shape so he removed his grass before planting. Then we had a lovely rain. The new grass has come in really nice. I think we live in the same area. That leads me to believe that now is the time to plant the rye.

I hope you get more info. Mine was pretty lame!

Best Regards,
Char Harris
