I had a bad infestation of whiteflies attacking my viburnum. Sprayed with strong garlic/pepper/seaweed tea every late afternoon for a week totally drenching both sides of the leaves, but each morning the buggers were back in ever increasing numbers. They were like a white cloud when the bushes were disburbed.

So I got Concern's "Multi-Purpose Insect Killer" which contains Pyrethins and PBO and sprayed the viburnum with it. The whiteflies were immediately killed.

My question is what are the cons in using PBO? Is there some article that might explain why I shouldn't use it? I dont intend on using it unless I have a insect problem that seems oblivious to other methods.

Thanks

Ck the links below. Pyrethins are bad enough but PBO is terrible. You got a quick fix with the stuff you bought, but long term you have created problems. Find out what is wrong with your plant & address those problems. Search this discussion board & the Dirt Doctor web site for help. For bugs that give you problems beyond garlic/pepper spray, try Neem Oil or one of the new plant derived sprays.

Thanks for the info.

The shasta viburnum are new transplants which appear very healthy but of course aren't established. The whiteflies initially went for my oakleaf hydrangeas and beautyberries as well, but they seemed to lose interest when sprayed with the garlic tea. Not so with the viburnum.

If the whiteflies return, I will use Neem Oil.
