I am new to this board and I hope I have put this in the right and place and my question is clear.

I bought a new house in Southwest Houston about 2 years ago. The dirt is mostly black clay after about 3 in. My backyard is about 3700 sq ft.

I have two questions. What is the best way to improve the soil?

I would like to plant a shade tree (Maple or Oak) 2 Avacado and 2 citrus trees. Is my backyard big enough for this?

I tried searching for answers but didn't find any. All opinions and help is appreciated.

You have enough room and the bed preparation instructions are on the Home page under Organic Guides. The tree planting instructions are in more detail in the Library under Tree Planting.

Welcome!

Improving the soil is all over this site. Go to the compost forum. Good information there.

Oaks are great including live oaks ,bur oaks, chinkapin oaks, shumard oaks.

Maples- bigtooth maple is great.

No one addressed the fact that you mentioned planting an avocado tree which will not work in your area. The winters are too cold.
