There is a commercial product for sale but we have always used sugar in the water, changed every other day.

Throwing a couple of copper pennies into the vase is supposed to help. I wonder if anyone has ever done a controlled test on preserving cut flowers.

Real Simple, the magazine, ran tests on this very thing for their May issue - the results were as follows for day seven:
aspirin - more than half the petals fell off
listerine - wilted
penny - bloomed beautifully, then wilted quickly
bleach - flowers stand tall, but color washed out
water alone - petals dropped after day 4
sugar - uneven blooming and splayed stems but flowers mostly intact (second best)
flower food - winner, full bouquet has a soft dramatic droop but blooms still nice
The article said that the flower food contains a biocide to kill bacteria, an acidifier to help stems drink water and a sugar to nourish the blooms.
