by Dr. Craig Verwers, D.V.M.

When people think of allergies they usually think of respiratory problems. But allergies in pets often express themselves as skin problems with itching, pustules, weeping or other disgusting symptoms. Sometimes when cats and dogs develop a skin problem, it is caused by bacteria or fungi. In this case, good nutrition, proper exercise and healthy living conditions will boost the immune system to help the pet overcome the skin problem.

Allergies are different. An allergy results from the immune system responding to an everyday protein like it is a disease. The immune system is what the body uses to fight a disease, but in the case of an allergy, it now sees the protein of everyday things (i.e. dust, food or pollen) as a foreign material that must be destroyed. The allergic reaction (and histamine response) results when the immune system fights an everyday material like it is a disease organism. The immune system is active and seems to be working very well, but for some reason it has become confused in its recognition of what is harmful and what is normal.

It has been theorized that increased exposure to chemicals may make us more prone to allergies or other mistakes in the immune system such as cancer. These chemicals confuse the immune system or damage it in someway. We don’t know for sure. But avoiding chemicals in our homes, yards and in our foods may help prevent the immune systems’ overreaction or suppression to everyday things in our life and thus decrease the allergy or cancerous response.

Muenster Natural Pet Foods are made with natural ingredients. Everything that needs to be preserved is done so with the Natural Preservatives vitamin E and citric acid. You can be assured that there will not be any chemical preservatives (BHA, BHT, and ethoxyquin) in any of the Muenster Natural Pet Foods. This lack of chemical preservatives, along with a five-grain blend of carbohydrates will help minimize allergy problems in pets and help lead to a Healthier and Happier Pet.
