Post subject:  Cats Peeing in Houseplants

:( My cat doesn't do this regularly, but I need some ideas on how to keep cats from peeing in my houseplants - especially since I just brought in several of my succulents which I don't want ruined. I think he likes the size of one particular potted plant container. I cleaned it out again and rinsed the roots really well of the plants that survived, removed the dead plants and replanted it with fresh potting soil. I also put some of those large wire staples in with the pointed side up as an interim solution, but don't want him to get hurt on them. I know this will deter him, but wanted some other suggestions. I did have someone suggest moth balls, but those would be horrible to put in my house plants with that obnoxious smell and whatever it does to the plants. I thought of putting orange peels in there since I used to do this outside to keep dogs from getting into the landscape, but didn't know if there would be a problem with mold if I did it with my indoor plants. I appreciate any suggestions.

You can use lava gravel in your house plants to deter your kitty. Cats typically do not like the rough texture of the gravel. Every once in a while there will be some bizarro cat that doesn't mind it, but it's not often. If that doesn't work, a light dusting of cayenne pepper always does the trick. Albeit a little harsh, it only takes one sniff and they'll leave the plants alone.

Howard also recommends the use of lava gravel outside if you have problems with squirrels digging in your pots or garden.

Thanks for that great idea. I didn't think of using the lava gravel. My grandmother used to brush tobasco sauce on the leaves of her plants to keep her cats from eating them which worked. I should have thought about the cayenne powder on the soil because of that. Thanks again!

Small pine cones, sea shells or sweet gum balls in the pots will not only keep the cats out of the soil, they are decorative and help hold in moisture. Most people who have sweet gum trees would love for you to pick up the spiny seed balls!

I have a sweet gum tree and that is a great idea to use those as a mulch to keep that cat out of the plants. I already sprinkled some cayenne pepper and he is leaving that one particular plant alone, but since this is free, I can also add that as extra insurance! Thanks! :D

We used forks planted handles down into the plant, tines up is very unfriendly to kitty butts. Or try spraying a pepper spray around the plant and the soil. Might be strong to delicate little kitty noses. Good luck.

New to forum, new to cat ownership! How much cayenne pepper should I put in my plant to prevent cat visits?

Thanks
Paul
