Post subject:  Good Use of Pet Hair???

Now I know I saw the subject somewhere on the BB forum but "search" turned up zero.

Someone used dog hair mixed with something, bananas I think, and placed it around their veggie plants.

I can't remember where posted or why it was used. Any ideas?

Don't know if you consider it a "good use" or not, but I put the little pet hair and trimmings from my beard in the compost pile. Just a basic use, nothing exotic.

Howdy Ya'll. Hair is made up from Keritan Protein. I believe this would be a great use on plants that are looking poor. I think that you could break down the hair with Apple Cider Vinager. You might add water to the mixture before putting in on the plants. Just a thought.

CowGirl: [to me they're all cute]

You make me jealous with all that outdoor fun stuff.

My thoughts on using hair is how it mats together when wet. It stays put, just like at the shower drain. I'm thinking of mixing it with some of the organic products around the base of the plants so the little bad guys have to crawl thru it. I look at it as a time release capsule.

It takes a while to decompose but hair has a lot of nitrogen in it. Same with leather and feathers.

After brushing my dogs, I spread the hair around the yard for the birds to use as nest material. I have found fur-lined nests around my yard. I also add it to the compost pile - the birds like to survey the compost pile contents also.

Post subject:  Pet Hair and Bird Nests

Trish,

Did you note what brand of birds used the pet hairs for nesting material?

The only bird that comes to mind in SA is the native sparrow; nest not well organized either.

Rather than trying to break down the hair, my idea was to try and use it as a medium to hold the organic additives close to the plants and release them into the soil when the hair becomes wet.

Post subject:  Hi Again!

Found the hair in sparrows nests that I was pulling out of the martin house, also in Carolina wren nests. With 3 large dogs, there is more than enough hair for all the birds. I had a contractor on my property who saw a mass of discarded dog hair on the ground and thought it was a dead animal for a moment!

I am healing, but slower than I would like. The Dr. says it will be three more months before it is totally healed. I went from crutches to a cane and am now off the cane, but still can't stay on it long or walk for very long distances. I have mowed my yard a couple of times now and can do a little planting by myself. I am going to plant a David Verity cuphea today and also move a lemongrass plant from a big pot to a planter bed. I have found it aches with damp and cold weather - something to look forward to! Enough complaining though - I am lucky that I didn't break my neck when I fell and that I am walking around at all.

How are things in your garden?

Trisha
