Post subject:  Mite problem from bird nest in hanging basket

Hi all, Im new here and have already posted over in the Lawn Care forum and I know this isn't really a Pet question, but it seemed to be the best place for it. We have what I think is a martin pair making a nest in a hanging basket airplane plant on the front porch. They already did this earlier in the spring and the 3 hatchlings all survived and we still see them around the house. Now they came back and made another nest with 5 eggs. We think this is really cool and they are fun to watch, but the problem is the plant is just COVERED with mites - I assume from the birds. We occasionally take it down to check the nest and carefully water the plant, but just touching it has your hand covered with mites and crawling up your arm. I am concerned because it is on the front porch and I don't want them brought into the house to get on the dogs or our pet rats (yes pet rats). Is there anything I can spray on the plant that won't harm the birds or the eggs ?

You might try sprinkling DE in the nest. It should get rid of the mite.

The birds have hatched now. Will the DE hurt the baby birds ?

:D The DE will not hurt the babies. Don't get it in their eyes but put
it around the sides and in the bottom of the nest if you can.
