Post subject:  Help! soil erosion

We recently acquired 75 acres of almost wilderness in E. Texas, with a building site cleared at the top of a gently sloping hill. There is significant erosion on the hillside, which had also been cleared of trees and brush. How could we stop the erosion and make the hillside attractive? With whom should we consult?

If your name is Shepherd, you might consult with yourself. I was going to suggest using goats or cattle on the slope. For cattle, roll out a roll of hay and let the cattle graze through it. They will take care of everything after that. When the hay seeds sprout, let them grow back to a foot or so and bring the cattle back.

You may need to borrow some cattle for this.

If that doesn't help, please write back. The use of animals works very well.

The chips from the native trees that were cut down should have been spread over that slope!
Good quality compost will not wash down that hill and will do more to stop erosion than most anything else.
Cover crop it with a legume or plant native grasses next fall.
