I have "spinless" prickly pear cactus that does not produce pears or flowers. Any suggestions as to the possible cause? Any suggested soil amendments that might remedy the situation |

I looked at your earlier posts - are you in south Dallas (Texas)? I have one of those spinless prickly pears also. Some years it doesn't produce much fruit, others it puts on a lot. How long has your plant been in place? Is it well established? I think that made a difference with my plant. I took out the older plant this spring and it had a few fruits on it, the younger one that is a few feet away didn't produce any fruit this year. I haven't tried to get fruit (it doesn't taste like anything for jelly - I tried it one year) so I haven't done anything except let it grow unmolested on that part of the yard. |

I live in DeSoto - Southern Dallas County The cactus is fully established and has been in place for several years without ever producing pears. I am not concerned about the pears except I would like the flowers. |

Is it planted in a dry area or does it get landscaping water? How did you plant it - cactus thrives in very well-drained soil and with minimal attention. It loves "benign neglect" more than any other plant I know! |

It is thriving as a plant and reproducting from dropped pads. And, it gets nothing but neglect. It is dry land with nothing but rain watering and in a place where drainage is good. It just doesn't produce fruit and, therefore, flowers. |
