| Post subject: | Worms |
I know I have read on here to not buy worms but this is my second year of organic gradening and i still have not seen a worm in my yard or garden yet. Where do the worms come from if I do not have any and do not buy them? Am I doing something wrong? |

Try looking on craigslist,under the Farm& Garden section and type in worms,other than that look in the streets in your neiborhood after a rain.I've been finding worms on the streats after a big rain ,picking them up and putting 'em in a ziploc bag,bringing them home and putting them in my flowerbeds,

Try using earthworm castings. You can buy a bag fairly inexpensively at your nursery that sell organic products. It is an excellent mild fertilizer and has earthworm eggs. |

The last time it rained here in Austin,there was worms(small ones) all over the streets.I was out there with some tweezers and a ziploc bag picking 'em up.I got some real strange looks from people driving by.

If those worms are redworms, you're doing good. If not, they won't be of much help. Most worms, other than redworms don't do very well when transplanted. They create burrows, get comfortable and don't like to be disturbed. Redworms are more forgiving about being moved. |

The red wigglers (composting worms) won't survive in our soil. They live in leaf litter on the forest floor and in compost bins and piles of manure. A few years back, when I stopped using chemicals, the worms just appeared. If you don't have them it is likely because your conditions are not friendly for worms. |

The best thing would be to wait for the rain, when it does look out in your garden if worms come out, if not look around your neighborhood there will be some places the worms come out to pickup some worms like produce guy did and leave them on your soil  You also should test if your soil is not compacted, if it is worms might be having a hard time digging a home, if you have compacted soil, use an aerator.

You can add hort. molasses to your garden which will draw in the earthworms and beneficial microbes. I assume you are completely organic in your lawn and garden maintenance? |
