Post subject:  Eggplant flowers fell off

I transplanted a japanese eggplant and it had two flowers on them that prompty fell off. Any idea what is causing this? They've been planted with compost in the soil and sprayed with Garret Juice and Thrive.

Could it be a pollination issue due to the weather we've had lately?

Thanks!!

That isn't a problem in and of itself. If they're not pollinated in a certain amount of time, the flower falls off. I imagine the plants are very small? Nurseries tend to push them to flower earlier than they might if you planted them directly from seed in the spring. Small plants aren't going to easily support fruit forming right now.

It's awfully early in the season to set fruit on eggplant anyway - they're a Mediterranean plant that loves the hot weather. I always get the most fruit in summer and fall.

Yes, I agree with northwesterner. Our eggplants didn't do well at all last year until it really got hot. Our first fruits began setting in July and we harvested from early August through early October.

Thanks! Yes, I figured with the cold weather we've been having (Dallas hasnt gotten the memo that it's May!) that could have soemthing to do with it!

There has been heat, but it wasn't enough to warm the soil temperatures yet. Here at the house I have two heat pump units, and am in the unusual situation now with one set to cool if the house gets warmer than 80 degrees, and one to warm if it gets cooler than 65 degrees. I've needed both in the last few weeks.
