I have a thin layer of green moss in several spots on my ground and also growing on the roots of an oak tree in my yard. Grass will not grow in these areas where the moss is located. Any ideas on what this stuff is and how to get rid of it? I live in East Texas.

Why would you want to get rid of the moss? If no grass grows there, at least now you have something green. It must stay fairly moist in those areas?

Yes, it is green, but it makes our yard look patchy and is not aesthitically appealing.

Remove the moss using a shovel take some soil with it, add some fresh soil to the area aerate and over-seed the the area (or the whole lawn). Aerating will encourage grass growth, though I am not sure if this is the best time to aerate, if the rains season has not already started in your area then aerate now, if you do not have an aerator you can rent one form one of the construction equipment rental company present at the Home Depot, try to use Topsoil.
