Hi there,

We have many acorns falling from a huge distance from our 50 year old oaks. We have read on the forum to try to not rake the leaves, but to mulch them with a mower. I'm a little confused what to do about all the acorns. I've seen that mowing them can be dangerous- is that true? Can they even be mowed? Or how do we leave enough mulched leaves down and only rake up the acorns? Need help please! Thanks in advance!

A few years back we had this issue at my Wife's old house. I chopped everything up with the mower, sucked it up with the yard vac and used it in the compost bin - the nuts heated things up.

Whatever I missed, the squirrels got.

Once you break them open they decompose pretty quick.

If your mower has a side shoot then yes, you do run the risk of creating an acorn gun that will spew acorns out at over 100MPH so if you are fond of the neighbor's kids this could be bad.

I mow lawns for extra money and one house we do has several oaks that drop acorns and we always just mow over them, they breakdown once they have been cracked open by the blade, and sometimes I fill two 5 gallon buckets full and put them in my compost pile. :D

Hi!

Our acorns are just left on the ground, mowed/mulched over (at a setting higher than the level of the acorns), and the lawn is just fine - no problems. Actually, the lawn is really good in the area where the acorns are!

Have a great day!
