Our house sits below street level and therefore our front flowerbeds are suffering. On top of the poor drainage our soil is terrible. I had it test a few years ago and the calcium level was through the roof. I have add numerous amendments to the soils over the past 2 years with no results. The plants that I want to keep are dwarf yaupon hollies and regular hollies. Neither are growing well and are yellow. My plan is to dig out the soils about 14" and put drains in and bring good soil in. My question is is 14" too deep or not deep enough to dig down. Thank you, James |

If the soil pH is greater than 7.0 near the roof, you might need to add more sulfur in that soil spot. You also need to keep adding the richest mature compost in that garden bed that you can get you hands on. That is the best idea ever for improving high acidic or high alkalinic soils, better that sand and a different form of imported dirt. Increase the soil biology in that spot with molasses products and maybe corn products, for extra sugars, carbs, and starches, as well as corn proteins. Happy Gardening! |

Was there any tree or shrub that was living there before you moved in? If there was, then go with those species first. |
