I have every type of weed in one part of my yard, Dandelions, crab grass, wild garlic. Today, I pulled out 95% of the weeds what can I do to prevent them from spreading again. Hewitt, Tx |

If you got 95% "weeds" in your yard, you probably are better off starting over and just treating it like builiding a virgin organic lawn. Decide on your favorite lawn seed or sod. Spread out proper amounts of compost and a protein fertilizer like corn products. If your lawn is too acidic (i.e. pH < 6.0), you will need lime also. Otherwise you could use gypsum if available. The secret to weed control in a sustainable lawn, is to always keep your lawn grass thick (add more lawn seed if needed each year), and always keep feeding your lawn organic matter. If it is not a lawn area, then cover it with a deep layer of shredded bark mulch. If it is a lawn area, do not water more often than once a month in the cool season and once a week in the heat of summer. Weed seeds need continual moisture to sprout. If you allow the surface of the soil to dry out between watering, then you will not get weeds. Of course Mother Nature has her say in this too. The other thing you can do is to mow your lawn at the mower's highest setting. This works for most grasses except bermuda, centipede, and creeping bentgrass. Those should be mowed at the mower's lowest setting. Tall grass casts a deep shadow on the soil below. Any weed seeds that sprout need sunlight to take root, so any shade you can cast on those seedlings will help choke them out. |
