I live near Austin and want to use corn gluten meal as a spring fertilizer and pre-emergent weed control.

For my area, would mid-February be the best time to apply it?
Where can I buy it around central Texas?
Can it be applied with a spreader? If not, what is the best way to apply it?
If I can find it now, can I store it in my garage until I apply it?

Thanks!

Up here in North Texas the rule of thumb is usually to apply it in the last week of December. You want to catch the coldest time before the new growth is starting, but if you don't have much frost or freeze activity it might not work quite as well. I think you're in the next hardy zone up from North Texas, and without as much cold it may be more difficult to catch that dormant period. By February I'd guess it would be too late.

In Austin you should have plenty of stores selling it, and you'll find a granular and a powdery type. You can keep it, but it does attract mice and such.

Howard has a directory for finding businesses that sell organic. It is this page:http://www.dirtdoctor.com/organic/garden/advance_business_listings/ and just enter your city and you'll find several. I see lots of them showing up down there.

You can get anything organic at John Dromgoole's nursery in Austin. Sorry I don't know the name of it.

I would hurry and apply now if you want any preemergent effect. And I would apply in a week or so for general fertilizing. I shoot for 3 weeks prior to the last frost date to fertilize. For us in San Antonio that is 3 weeks prior to March 15th.

Thanks David! Can it be applied with a broadcast spreader?

That is how I did last year and it seemed to work fine. It does "fly around" in the air a little so you may look funny when finished.

If you can find the pelletized version it does not fly around. Otherwise it is dust and will end up in every crack and orifice it can find. Apply when the wind is very low.
