Post subject:  Remedy for trees that are planted too deep

Hi!
Last year I had major surgery, and as an act of generosity and 'cheering up', my husband planted a small orchard for me on our land. The soil is rock hard red clay,,,he had to use a pick to dig the holes. As sweet as he is, the trees are too deep. probably 4 inches too deep give or take. He managed to get some of them mulched using the 'lasagna' method of layering newspaper around them and placing grass and leaves on top. The old pasture we live on is solid bermuda grass so this seemed to make sense to me, and has been successful at smothering out the bermuda as well attracting some worms :)
I am worried that I will kill the trees if I try to excavate around the trunks and outward to remedy the depth issue. Dont most of the trees roots live in the top of the soil?
Also, the poor things have been sitting in 'clay bowls' for a year now, so I imagine some root rot has occured. I read Howard's sick tree program, and will start immediately! I just feel like it would be good to get more in depth instructions on how to excavate the roots.
Thank you so much!
Mary
