My neighbor just showed me her sweetgum in the parkway that was hit by a car a couple of nights ago. The tree trunk is about 20 inches in diameter at the widest point. The impact left a swath of bark missing from one side of the tree about 5 feet tall by 15" wide. Some of the wood is scraped (under where the bark used to be.) I gave her Howard's recipes for tree trunk goop and for the sick tree treatment. I know Howard doesn't recommend wrapping trees, but with a wound the size of this one, I wonder if it would be advised? Or is there anything else that can be done?

I'd say just have her make plenty of the tree trunk goop, apply every time it's washed off for a good while, and make sure she does a monthly or every other weekend foliar feed of the tree with a touch of extra molasses in the spray.
