Post subject:  Crepe Myrtle Trees -- peeling their bark

I have three crepe myrtle trees, newly planted this year which are shedding their bark. They flowered out beautifully and otherwise look healthy.

Is this usual for them or can I help them if it is a sign of distress?

Thank you --Grower

They are supposed to do this as they grow.

Thank you for letting me know that this is normal. It is a relief -- will they peel their bark every year at this time?

I water them twice a week. Is the proper amount? I also fertilize monthly.

The area they are planted in is rocky, I mean really rocky (white slate rock), but it drains well. I thought we had hit the conteninal shelf when their holes were dug!

I'm not sure when the bark peels, probably when there's been some growth. Their smooth trunks are beautiful after they lose the rough bark.

Watering is never on a schedule. Water when they need it. They like moist, but not wet soil.

Yeah, mine did a whole 'Dance of hte Seven Veils' strip last month.

Near as I can tell, the more bark strips off, the more the thing grew and needed it.
