Post subject: | Crepe Myrtle Trees -- peeling their bark |
I have three crepe myrtle trees, newly planted this year which are shedding their bark. They flowered out beautifully and otherwise look healthy. Is this usual for them or can I help them if it is a sign of distress? Thank you --Grower |

They are supposed to do this as they grow. |

Thank you for letting me know that this is normal. It is a relief -- will they peel their bark every year at this time? I water them twice a week. Is the proper amount? I also fertilize monthly. The area they are planted in is rocky, I mean really rocky (white slate rock), but it drains well. I thought we had hit the conteninal shelf when their holes were dug! --Grower |

I'm not sure when the bark peels, probably when there's been some growth. Their smooth trunks are beautiful after they lose the rough bark. Watering is never on a schedule. Water when they need it. They like moist, but not wet soil. |

Yeah, mine did a whole 'Dance of hte Seven Veils' strip last month. Near as I can tell, the more bark strips off, the more the thing grew and needed it. |
