I obtained several fruits from a Texas Hickory in Gillespie County in October, and would like to try growing them. How should I start?

It's possible that they are too dried out by now to sprout, but you lose nothing by trying. :)

I would plant them in 5 gallon pots about 2" deep and keep the pots outdoors. Cover the pots with 1/2" inch or smaller wire screen so the squirrels don't clean you out. If and when they start to grow, you need to adjust the screen so they have room to grow, but don't remove it completely as the squirrels will dig up the seedlings to get at the remaining nut underground.

It would also work well to plant them directly in the ground right were you want them to grow. It would be hard to transplant them after they sprout as they develop long tap roots quickly. You would probably want to cover these with a screen of some sort.

The reason I'm recommending outdoor planting is that I don't know what kind of chilling requirements they might need to germinate, but they probably need some.

Hope this helps.

Thanks - do you think the chilling requirement is less than 60 days or more than 60 days?
