| Post subject: | tree flair and Home and Garden lecture question |
Good Morning, I am new to this site but not new to the ground crew. However I think I missed this subject that is until last Sat. At the Home and Garden show Howard was presenting a slide show and lecture on tree flair and the need to dig it back out if you can't see it. He said sometimes this may be as deep as 14" while one person went as deep as 7 feet. What I didn't hear is how to keep the sides from caving back in and covering the flair up again. Any suggestions? Help will be appreciated. Katherine Plano |

FLARE! Basically, they shouldn't look like staws stuck in the ground. Try using an airspade. Sam Hill Tree Care has one. |

What the three of us, Organic1 (Nadine), Kathe Kitchens and myself did when we were at the cemetery in Malone was to dig it out and spread the dirt out away from the trees. The most we had to go down was 4 - 5 inches. If it caves back in, just dig it back out. Kathe told me that the trees will do much better. When planting the trees, it is better to plant them a little higher and let them settle down. Don't tamp the dirt down, but rather settle it with water. Also leave the mulch about 2 inches away from the trunk. Howard had put pictures, of the guy digging down to the root flair, on his web page. I don't know if they are still there. It was pretty amazing how deep he had to go down. |
