I've noticed a number of trees around Dallas this fall with groups of small, white, hard seeds. They seeds are about half the size of a china berry. It's a pretty good looking tree but I did not notice the trees before the leaves dropped. Any idea what kind it is?

If the seeds are growing in little clusters that are beginning to open up during this winter you are probably seeing the short-lived Chinese tallow tree. This tree can be visually appealing with excellent fall color, yellow flowers in late spring and an interestingly shaped trunks. However, this tree is subject to insect and diseases and will suffer from freeze damage. Coupled with it's short life span this tree is near the bottom of the list of trees to plant in this area :(

Thanks. I looked up Chinese Tallow and I believe that's what I've been seeing. It doesn't take a lot of searching to convince me this is not a great tree to pursue.
