Hi Everybody:

We have two sixty year old live oaks in our front yard, so it's completely shaded. I'm looking for a native or well-adapted small tree that will work in shade and be okay with being planted under well-established existing trees.

Peace, Chris Terry

Some of the understory plants that would enjoy that shade include Japanese maples and redbuds. For maples you'd have to do some research on the bed preparation, make sure it's rich but well-drained. Japanese maple page from library of organic information.

Redbud also does well in the understory. It can grow larger than the Japanese maple. Redbud information.
