Post subject:  Post Oak Damage

I just lost 1 trunk from a 3 trunk post oak. The tree has been estimated to be between 120 and 200 years old. It has a diameter of 64 inches. I have posted pictures below of the tree and the remaining section where the trunk broke off.
I have had 2 tree specialists recommend removing the complete tree.
I would appreciate any recommendations or references to confirm my next action.

Look at the base - it's suffocating because it is too deep in the ground. Pull off the grasses and turf and carefully scrape off the dirt until you have a good root flare exposed. You're in North Texas, aren't you? Call Moore Tree Care and see if they'll come out, or recommend someone to help. But definitely expose the flare.

Unfortunately, the consensus is the tree has to be removed.
NW, thanks for the Moore Tree Care recommendation. Yes, I am in Weatherford.
After removal I will post the cost for everyone's reference.

Call and talk to Howard, ask him to take a look at these photos. See what he says. I hate to see you lose a huge post oak if it can be avoided.

The Post Oak was removed today and as suspected both trunks had extensive decayed wood which would have made them more suspect to fall over time and damage the area below. I guess I will have more tomatoes in the garden next year with the additional sunlight!

We take solace that we still have one large Post Oak left in the backyard, just as big and old as the one removed above. It provides wonderful shade for our patio.

Take a look at the base of that tree - be sure it isn't too deep. You want that root flare to be well exposed. That looked like part of the problem with the tree you lost.
