| Post subject: | Chinquapin oak help! |
I have just planted a chinquapin oak (10 gallon) container grown tree. I know the timing is terrible with the heat, but I needed something in that area of my lawn. I am in Ft Worth and have heavy clay soil. The tips of some of the leaves have become "crispy" for a lack of proper terminology. The only thing I have put on the tree is water and Garrett's juice. Can any let me know what may causing this and what I need to do? Thanks in advance. |

Tell us how you planted it. This is a good time of year to get trees on sale, but you have to be careful not to plant them too deep, and you need to soak them before planting and be sure there isn't extra dirt in the pot above the natural root flare. About root flares Tree planting video from 2008 - Howard does a lot more regarding unwrapping the roots and these days he almost bare roots them (even when they come from a pot). If you didn't soak it to avoid the edge of the dirt from the pot acting like a barrier to water, and knock out some of that dirt and (carefully) pull roots out from the tree and spread them in the hole you dig, you can end up with circling and girdling roots or a tree that won't get enough water. If you didn't plant it properly, you can redo it. |

I did soak it well before planting and tried to ensure that it was not too deep. I also loosened the dirt up and "untangled" the roots. I feel that I followed the plan well. I may be jumping the gun, as the tree is newly planted. I am new to organics, could Howard's juice have done any harm? I used a pump sprayer with juice and applied it to the trees leaves. |

Compost tea won't harm it. Sounds like it's got a good start - just be careful that it isn't too wet - which can be equally destructive as too dry. |
