We had some high winds at the end of last year as the trees had already shed their leaves and one Post Oak that is about 12" in diameter and maybe 30 feet tall started leaning over at about a 45 degree angle and soon afterwards we had torrential downpours and it fell completely over (not completely, the trunk is about eight feet of the ground because of some large branches holding it up from the surface).

This year I was planning to cut it up for firewood but just for fun I wanted to see if it was still alive and waited for it and all the neighboring trees to flower & leaf out. Well, this tree looks just as good as all the healthy trees around it!

I was thinking of using a huge electric winch that I have on my car trailer that can handle 9,000 lbs. and pulling it back up and cable it to a nearby larger tree with some rubber garden hose around the cable so it doesn't damage the bark. I would also soak the root ball area before the lift to help minimize the trauma to the shifting roots.

Would I be wasting my time?

It is my understanding that post oaks are pretty sensitive to root damage. This year's leaves might be the tree's "last hurrah" before it dies. If you can pull it back upright I don't know of any reason why you shouldn't try, but just be aware that chances are good it may not survive.

Thanks for the response "northwesterner". It's worth a shot, huh?

Take a look in the library at Howard's information about the "sick tree treatment." You'll have to take special care of this one for a while, and that plan will be a help.

It sounds like it is worth a shot.
