I have a live oak tree which I estimate to be thirty years old. The tree seems to be healthy, but there is a semi-circular crack in the bark beginning on one side of a limb and extending over the top and to the other side of the limb. This limb is about 9 feet from the ground. Lower down about a foot or so, there is a similar crack in the bark around the nob where a limb has been removed. The "lips" of the cracks are of a darker color than the tree bark itself. You can see all the way to the wood of the tree in parts of the crack. Are these cracks likely to be a problem? |

Has the tree been in any stress? Any changes to grade, etc? Many trees get cracks in the bark as they expand their girth, but you shouldn't be able to see all the way to the wood of the tree. If it was just the limb, I'd say maybe you're looking at wind-stress or the limb was too heavy. But to happen where a limb hasn't been for a long time, that's not good. I'd hit the wounds with hydrogen pyroxide to kill any bad bacteria, then use tree trunk goop on the wounds. Track it's progress over the next few weeks and see if it heals/improves. |
