Dear folks, Last Saturday Howard mentioned something about tree damage from air polution, but I didn't hear all he said. I have noticed a number of different trees in the Huntsville area that have trunks that have snapped like the proverbial matchstick about 5 to 10 feet from the ground during storms over the last three to four years. The trees appeared to be healthy with a diamaters of 8 inches on up to large trees and were oaks, pines, hackberry, pecan etc. The winds were brisk, but no tornadoes. Other trees in the same areas were untouched. One hackberry in a local park had a single trunk out of a group of four broken off; two years later the other trunks came down. The affected trees were in various areas around town. Someone suggested air polution to me, but others didn't think that possible. What do you think? Thanks, Judith |

I'd have to see some other definitive sighs (such as the leaves suffering) to call it air pollution. Plus to affect a tree that badly, a tree would have to be in close range downwind of a major pollution prodcer. |
