I am getting ready to install a paved pathway in my front yard. In one spot a large root exist that is about 2 inches below ground level and I need to remove it to lay a sand base/pavers. Can I cut this one root without harming the tree?

I really think it all depends what kind of tree it is, how healthy it is and how old it is.

For example, I had to chain-saw stop a single surface root flare, about 4 inches in girth, from a 60 yr old pecan that was heading into the foundation perimeter wall (pier & beam foundation) of my home 3 years ago.

I tree gooped it after and the tree is still alive and kickin' today! But then, pecans are mostly deep tap root trees so the part I had to hit was not of as much consequence as it may be to a tree with major, shallow, large flared roots.
