| Post subject: | Replace Oaks and Cedars in Bastrop County |
We've lost some very nice 30 - 40+ feet high cedars and several oak trees because of the drought. The cedars all had carpenter ants inside them. When is the best time to replant? How close to the old tree sites can we plant. Problems/ precautions? Thanks for the help? |

Regarding your Oak Trees in Bastrop, how long did it take for them to die? R U sure it was 100 drought related? First, I would concur with Pirate. I would only keep a cedar where there are no other trees around and the shade of this tree is vital. As for planting time, this is it: it is moist, cool and the grd is easily prepared, quite the opposite of our last summer...good planting time is anytime you eliminate the potential for stress and shock. The key to any successful planting of trees is consistent amts of regulated water. If you are planting trees in pastures where only rain is their water source, then avoid areas that are on hills or mounds, they dry out first...also protect their trunks from deer that will rub all their bark away and more... For live oaks, if you follow the basic tree planting instructions, ensure you are not planting in an area where water stands for any longer than 12-24 hrs and always water properly, then you should be good to go. Oaks like a lot of sun and if planting for shade of your house, consider the foundation/root barriers...also, mix the variety of oaks that are Oak Wllt resistant... good luck, tstex |
