Post subject:  Chalk Maple struggling because....?

I bought a Chalk Maple (Acer leucoderme) from RCW nursery in Houston about year and a half back. Planted it myself and it's still alive. However, it does not seem to be, you know, thriving. It has grown very little, and in summer the leaves all look burned, that is, dead and brown from the tips going back maybe a third of the individual leaf.

Confession: I happened to plant it in the sunniest spot in the backyard. Next summer a huge chinese tallow (came with the house) may shade it somewhat from direct high summer sun. My question: Is direct sunlight causing this, or Houston heat in general, or something else? (I have an Acer barbatum waiting in the wings, just dying for a shot at it). Any ideas?
