Post subject:  Protecting Pecan crop ?

I have a great pecan crop today----- Early, the triee dropped a great deal of fruit, which seemed to be due to "over production" (after extensive research).
Now the pecans are bigger than thumb and appear to be secure (none dropped in past 3 weeks). Tree still "loaded" with pecans.
Had a few webworms, handled individually. Have seen a few stink bugs. Leaves healthy and dark grn.

Any suggestions on fertiziler, sprays, etc. etc. to protect the tree and crop now ????
This is a BIG tree, 50" tall, 28" diameter trunk.

Thanks,
OneeyeJack

Squirrels probably have your number also. I have dogs that chase off squirrels, but that wouldn't work for you, because my dogs probably eat as many pecans as the squirrels! I visit a neighbor's yard when I'm out walking this time of year and pick up pecans, and because they're with me, I have to race to pick up as many as I can while they eat their way across the yard.

A couple of weeks have passed since you first posted this, and I suspect you're finding many of them are now falling. How is the crop, and did the pests stay away? If the tree is as healthy as you say, it sounds like pests won't be much of a problem. Keep the soil healthy, through the year, be sure it isn't planted too deep, and if you need to treat web worms, think BT (though I wouldn't broadcast it unless a problem appeared, because it will kill butterflies and beneficial moths also).

Good luck!
