Post subject:  Live Oaks kill my grass?
Just planted 3 live oaks and then was told that the trees had an acid in their roots that would kill my bermuda grass. Is this ture? If so, can I do anything to prevent it?

Well, the Live Oak I had at my previous location did "kill" the Bermuda grass beneath it, but it was not from any acid from it's roots. My Live Oak had a very dense canopy which successfully "starved" the grass below from a sufficient amount of sunlight. Grass grew beautifully all around the drip line of the tree. I used a combination of mulch and ground cover to fill in under the tree.

Another problem with live oaks in the lawn is that people "forget" to rake the leaves and thus smother the grass. In the town where I used to live, half the properties had this problem. My neighbor had a live oak and there was a line of grass up to his property because I raked and he didn't.

Also, make sure you pick up as many of the acorns as possible. I was able to maintain St. Augustine under my Live Oaks. Don't know about Bermuda, though.

We have been growing our own live oak trees with good success. We love them! We have many other oaks in our landscape that lose their leaves in the winter. We rake leaves under the live oak and also mulch leaves under it and that seems to help a lot. We have St. Augustine grass on our entire lawn and nothing seems to hinder the growth of the grass. We have also planted sprigs of SA to choke out some Bermuda that's still on parts of the landscape. We have grown young live oaks from the acorns we pick up and also from some tiny volunteer live oak trees that show up in the spring.
