| Post subject: | starting seeds |
I have several varieties of tomatoes and peppers that are doing well and some that aren't. I'd like to start some seeds now for a fall garden planting, but I haven't a clue how to accomplish this. Do I harvest seeds from the peppers and tomatoes and let them dry, then start in potting soil, perlite? Special treatment? Easy, hard? Thanks for the advice. |

I'm getting ready to do the same thing! I generally use Rabbit Hill Farms' seed starting mix. I have good results with it. And I just reuse old black pots. As for seeds, I have used past years' seeds from veggies, but never current year, or I use organic seeds I have in packets from my shop. I would think you could just let them dry at room temp, possibly in the fridge due to all the humidity, but don't freeze of course. I also will generally soak my seeds in a heavy liquid seaweed/water solution overnight before I plant. Good luck! |

I have some nice looking tomato plants I started from seed. I bought the packets of organic seed and started them in a sterile mix then later transplanted them into the ground. One plant has set fruit! Some may be too crowded. I have a hard time thinning plants for some reason... |

I love it when you can watch a plant go from seed to fruit! Somehow, it is just more satisfying. I always feel like I am cheating when I plant a plant and say I grew it. ha ha. But then up north, the soil is much more seed friendly I think. I'm still learning, too - and seeds take more time and attention - something I'm a bit short of at times...
