Read the interesting article that Matt Boring wrote about water gardening. Don't know if he is a regular visitor to this site, if not maybe someone else has an opinion on what I am going to suggest. Was raised in West Texas in farm and ranch country, where cattle were watered mostly by earthen tanks or what some people might call a pond. Gypsum was present in a lot of areas, generally just called gyp rock. Where it was predominately present the stock tanks were crystal clear, if not they were muddy. Fish did very well probably because of the better visability in the water, plants did well also. Since gypsum is reported to help salt problem in soil, looks like it be an asset to add some of these stones to the bottom of the pond. Not the pellets that you can buy at stores because they seem to break down, but some of the larger stones that are in the pastures. I have a small stock tank (Grandkids fishing hole) that I plan to haul some in and see if it helps. It is clear now but not crystal clear as some back home. Any comments or ideas are greatly welcome. |
