Post subject:  tips for a new gardener?
I inherited a very plain backyard in my new house. The former owners took very little care of two gorgeous rose bushes (although, they are taller than me at this point, so I guess they are trees! :))

I also have an octogonal bed just begging for some color.

Any suggestions for a brand new gardener in beginning a bed?

Since I don't know where you live, I'd recommend you go to a local nursery, preferrably an independent, organic nursery, and talk to them about the plants that grow best in your area, not only for cold hardiness, but heat tolerance (how much water they need and how much sun exposure they can take). They are pretty informative about the plants that will do best in your area.

And, to make it really worth while, invest in perennials, plants that stay year after year appropriate to your area. Most bloom sometime throughout the year, but many which may have distinctive foliage that give color that can be as amazing as annual flowers. You can do small patches of annuals and bulbs to round out the bed and give yourself seasonal color.

Have you looked at "Plants of the Metroplex"? John Howard Garrett is the author. It's a really great book.

I like perennials as well! I'd rather have things coming back year after year, but annuals are fun for a change of looks throughout the year.

It is ideal to prepare your bed and let it set for a few days before planting. See "Bed Preparation" in one of the information sections of this website, or you cn just do a search for it.
