Post subject:  Tiller types??

I am in the market for a tiller, but need some help.

I do not know to get a front tine tiller, a mid tine tiller, or a rear tine tiller, because I do not know the pros & cons of each type. Once I can figure out which type, I can determine the best value, etc. The various manfacturers' web sites will make recommendations of several of their tillers, but do not explain the tine location difference.

The tiller will be used on several large beds & for clearing new areas in the future.

Can anyone give me a quick course on the differences & their pros & cons???

I can't give you a summary of the types but can share my experience with the front and rear types.
The front tine tillers are hard to control and jerk and pull you all over the place.
The rear tine types are simple to control due to the weight distribution and overall design. I rent a Honda from Home Depot for $35.00/hr. This machine costs around $700. At one use a year for me, thats about 20 years use and I don't have to store it, put gas in it or keep it tuned and repaired. This machine is the top of the line, has three speeds plus reverse and starts on one pull every time.

I have an old craftsman front tine tiller, and yeah, it can bounce around. But hell, that's only an issue when I haven't tilled before in an area. After that, it's like walkin thru cocoa. So I guess it's a matter of how much you wanna wrestle with it, and how hard will that be for a small garden?

I've had no trouble with the craftsman, but I also have two monkey wards tillers that I'll get fixed before too long, and I'll likely have no complaints about those either.

I have used front and rear, and would not recomend a front tine for breaking ground. I have 2 troy-bilts and did not use either to put my garden in this year. I used nothing but mulch this year and it seemed easier than in years gone past.

My experience is that a tiller is a great device for spreading weeds and other weeds in a garden. I prefer a front tine and Troy built used to be very good. There are some commercial ones which might be better.
I would just go with raised beds in the garden, works much better....
